(Sorry Guys, No Exclamation Mark for this One.)
Meatless Monday Six was non-blogworthy. We had baked potatoes and broccoli.
Yep. That’s it.
That’s what we had.
I even had a plan for it. Knew what I was gonna make. Tweeted about it.
I’ll be honest: I might not have allotted enough time to make what I planned to make, but that’s water under the bridge. Because I didn’t get to make it.
Know why?
Out of all the days in the year. In my marriage, really, Dave decides this is the day he is going to tell me what he would like to have for dinner.
And that would be, potatoes.
Plain baked potatoes.
With broccoli on the side.
When I tried to overrule him, he simply said: “You ask me all the time what I want to have for dinner. Well, I am finally telling you. Tonight, I want baked potatoes.”
He is a man of brief and true statements. But come on. Like I can write a post about baked potatoes and broccoli!
I don’t even know what to say. I am rendered speechless. And I have to wonder if this was the plan all along.

Yeah, I can understand your shock. I don’t think I’ve ever asked someone to make me baked potatoes and broccoli for dinner. Maybe he had too much meat on Super Bowl Sunday and wanted to detox?
What was your original plan?

Touché! That meatfull sunday post. Ugh. I can hardly look at that first photo. Really. Chili is just not that visually appealing.
The original plan was to make a roasted tomato soup (little cream, highly seasoned with fresh baguette croutons) and some sort of cool pressed cheese sandwich. Maybe incorporating blog commenter Laurie’s suggestion to add a layer of butternut squash.
Then, when the commandant called and ordered me to use the potatoes, I switched gears with plans for a long-standing family potato soup recipe that would be perfect for the blog.
But no. He further extended his reign and asked for bakers. And I was left with nothing more than my own wit to sustain the meatless monday post.
🙂

How did your kids respond?
Nat Alea from OK says
AAAWWWW. A man after my own heart! I love baked potatoes and could eat them every night of the week.

OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, ADAM!
*they agreed with Dave*
There. Are you happy? I am the minority. But. (and this is a big ‘but) I am the brains, the beauty and the life of this organization.
🙂

I love them too.
At the *right* time.
And Meatless Monday, with all the world watching, is not the time.
Well, maybe not *all* the world.
heh heh.
Hey Adam. Just making sure you know I’m kidding, right?
Adam says
I knew you were kidding. I was just curious what the kids thought.

I figured you knew. I figure anyone crazy enough to hang out here and read my blather has enough sense to know I’m kidding. Just wanted to be safe.
For the record: Morgan (the 15 year old) has the radar sense of any teenage girl and — even without knowledge — automatically picks the very thing I don’t want. Doesn’t matter what. Restaurant, clothes, etc. Always the exact opposite of both me (and her brother).
Charlie (12.5) is my clueless wonder who only wants to please me and asks me endless questions about my question: “Why?” “What do you want?” “What are the choices again?” “What did Morgan say?” “Which is easier?” You get the picture… When the dust settled, it came out (with many apologies) that he, too, wanted bakers, but “would have been happy” with potato soup. Not so much the tomato soup.

We had baked potatoes last night too! And steak and eggs, dont assume we are fancy rich college kids living on steak but more like frozen stolen steak from sandras freezer. i dont think she knows yet.
Nat Alea from OK says
Tomorrow night for sure I’m having baked potatoes since dinner is waiting for me when I get home from work.

You should be thanking him! Easy, Easy, Easy!

I want a partner who challenges me to be more than I am. Who extends my reach. Who holds me to a higher standard. I want a partner to share in my dreams. My hopes. Who mirrors my soul…
Thanking him? For mediocrity?
Surely you jest.
Tami @ MM says
Haha, I think that’s pretty good Jennie! Even though I feel your pain (I’m sure you would have liked to cook up something creative) sometimes a baked potato really hits the spot 😉 Also, sorry that your legions of devoted fans are siding with hubbie here, lol.
You should get the family to try some stuffed potatoes primavera (http://www.meatlessmonday.com/stuffed-potatoes-primavera/) Best of both worlds, no?
Keep up the good work! 😀

Yes. Potatoes rule the earth. I could live on them. I guess I can exert my control over making Mondays Meatless, but I can’t control what sounds good to them. My vision is more exploratory: looking for new foods to love that also happen to be meatless! That link looks good! Now find me an AFRICAN potato dish that uses potatoes and I’m IN!
